Chapter 25
I need you. The words rang in Hunterâs head, reaching into him like the call of a siren through a turbulent gale. She needs me? But he didnât move, his mind trapped in a cyclone of its own.
âHunter,â she shouted over the winds, louder this time. âCome over here.â
Snapping out of it, his attention shifted from her to the branch she was lifting. Oh, something under the tree.
He glanced at the gelding. Dare he tie him off and join her? He decided against that idea and took the few steps to her, leading the gelding along. To say the horse was skittish was an understatement. Hunter scooped an arm under his head and stroked him on the other side of his face, cradling his jaw on his bicep. A few more steps, so far so good. Once they were a few feet behind Jackie, he palmed another sugar cube. While Pewter lipped it off and chewed, Hunter joined Jackie in a squat. âWhat is it?â
âLook there.â She pointed at an area of broken pine branches under the tree trunk.
âWhere?â
She moved aside a sprig of pine to reveal fur. Lots of gray and white fur. Mostly under the tree, andâ¦looking rather squished. Aw, darn. âLooks like a grey wolf. Bad timing for the poor thing.â
âIsnât this unusual? I thought wolves were scarce these days.â Jackie spoke over her shoulder at him.
âThey are. Wonder what heâs doing here.â
âShe.â
âHow are you so sure? Are you getting a good view?â
She twisted her head back to him and he saw her eyes shimmering, making her irises look like polished bronze. Tears.
âItâs okay, pretty filly.â Hunter reached out and stroked her hair in comfort, taming the wind-blown mop of sun-kissed beauty. âDoesnât look like she suffered. How do you know itâs a she?â he asked again.
âLook.â She lifted another portion of a needled branch to reveal a pup, right next to its mother.
Hunterâs heart ached for them.
Just then, a whine reached his ears through the wind.
âOh, Hunter!â Jackie got down on her hands and knees and crawled up the trunk a ways. Moving another branch aside, a clump of gray fur wiggled. Then it whined again. âHereâs another one. Itâs alive. I think its hurt, though.â
âOkay, up you go.â Hunter grasped Jackieâs arm and lifted, effectively popping her to her feet. For such a tall woman, she sure was a lightweight.
âWhat? No, wait.â She looked ready to bite his head off. Her feistiness made him want to smile, but he knew that wouldnât be appreciated right now.
âEasy does it. You hold Pewter. Let me do my job.â
âOh. Of course.â She grasped the lead line and backed out of his way.
He handed her a couple of sugar cubes, then turned to face the victims. After several long minutes, digging under the tree to free the pups, he checked them both. The mother had taken the brunt of the impact. One pup had been too near her. But the second had been a few feet away. As soon as heâd confirmed the mother and the nearest pup were dead, he reached for the whining one.
